Diet For PCOS

PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition that happens due to hormonal imbalance.  Hormones are chemical messengers that control the way the body works. For example, during pub hormones changes  during puberty and send out signals in the body to start periods in girls.

PCOS is a common condition which effects every 1 in 5 women of child-bearing age. In PCOS either of these two hormones, insulin and male-type hormones that is androgens are produced in higher levels. This results in the following symptoms. These symptoms can however vary in the intensity and sometimes pcos has only one of these symptoms.

The symptoms are :--

1) Menses being less regular (more or less often)

2) More than normal hair growth on face/ stomach/back.

3) Acne or pimples.

4) Emotional problems (anxiety or depression)

5) Easy weight gain or difficulty losing weight

6) Delay in getting pregnant etc

PCOS is seen more often in Asian and north African women. Lifestyle patterns such as the way we eat and exercise can make the condition better or worse. INCREASE IN WEIGHT IS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RISK FACTOR OF THIS CONDITION – which means that it can lead to this condition. This is a vicious cycle- with pcos causing weight gain and weight gain causing pcos. Due to this reason, the women suffering from pcos are often advised by their doctors to lose weight.

Diet and exercise are important parts of managing PCOS. This is because young women with PCOS often have higher levels of insulin (a hormone) in their blood, and many have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. Knowing the right foods to eat as well as the kinds of food to limit can improve the way you feel. It will also help you lose weight. Eating well, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight (or losing even a small amount of weight if you're overweight) can improve PCOS symptoms.

OUR APPROACH IN PCOS

We start by taking a detailed history of the client and doing the body composition analysis so as to understand the body better. Then based upon the above mentioned information, we chart the diet plan of the client. The diet plans are mostly low glycemic index plans and we avoid all kind of processed and refined foods as it helps in improving the condition. The diet plans can be planned in two ways – plans with lot of healthy options ( one time consult) OR the structured PCOS diet program which involves daily diet plans given in weekly format.

PCOS DIET PLAN

You don’t need to go out of your way to buy any special foods in our PCOS program.  Just like with any healthy diet plan, your meals will include a healthy balance of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, plant–based protein, lean meats, and healthy fats. Not only this, you will also get to understand the healthy way to incorporate your favourite foods in your diet plan.
